Crossover and Pine Wood Derby Update

All – We have finally gotten in our replacement Pine Wood Derby track (after the our old one was stolen a few weeks ago) and have everything set up to have our race on Saturday morning before Crossover in the evening.

Take some time to go back and review the race rules we posted back in January (found here) to make sure you don’t have any surprises on race day.

Friday:
5:00 pm – Begin arriving at Camp Brorein. Campsite will be noted at Entrance

Saturday:
8:30 – Opening Flag Ceremony
9:00 – noon – Pinwood Derby (Class A Uniform).
noon – 1:00 Lunch on your own
2:00 – 3:00 Afternoon Hike with plant and animal track identifications.
4:30– 5:30 Eat Dinner (Hamburgers, Hotdogs, & sides)
6:00 Crossover Ceremony begins at the lake front by Swed Hall (Class A Uniform)
8:00 Campfire & Skits

Sunday:
Pack up and head home!

Pinewood Derby Postponed

Good Afternoon Everyone, There has been a recent event that will cause us to move the Pinewood Derby / Blue and Gold Award Dinner to next Saturday March 28th.

I discovered this morning that sometime in the last week or two someone broke into the Pack trailer and stole several items. One of those items being the Pinewood Derby Track. I have followed up many leads to borrow another track until we can replace ours. I was unsuccessful with that endeavor. I am able to order a replacement track and timer that will be delivered to us in time for next Saturday.

I will be at the Den Meeting a little late this evening. As soon as the honor society inductions are finished at my sons school I will be there to answer any questions you will have.

I apologize for this inconvenience and hope that everyone will still be able to participate in the events.

January 29 Pack Meeting Location Change

This is a notice to everyone that this evening’s meeting will take place at First Reformed Church of Tampa on the north east corner of Webb Road and Hillsborough Ave. We will be meeting in Building “B”. There is a prior planned event at the school this evening. Please try to be dressed in class A uniforms tonight, we will be having a visitor from the Scout Council tonight.

Leader Training Dates and Locations

Here is a listing of all upcoming Cub Scout Leader training dates and locations with links to the event flyer for that event.  Cubmasters, Assistant Cubmasters, Den Leaders, and Committee Members should register and attend the Cub Scout Leader Specific training.  Additionally, we need at least two people to attend the BALOO training.  If there are any Webelos leaderst that want to attend training specifically for Webelos Scouts to help with their transition with the Troop, Outdoor Leadership Skills for Webelos Leaders is highly recommended.

2015 Pine Wood Derby Date and Rules

All – The date has been set for Pack 246’s 2015 Pine Wood Derby!  It will be on March 21st starting at First Reformed Church of Tampa.  The address there is:

Weigh-in will begin at 1pm and the races will start promptly at 2pm.  Scouts should be wear their full Class A uniforms.

The rules for this year’s race are the same rules we’ve always had.  They are as follows:

  1. Each boy should build his car with adult supervision. Adults should not build cars while boys watch.
  2. Each car should be built new this scouting season, from new materials. Please do not recycle last year’s fast car, best wheels, etc.
  3. Maximum width including tires and axles must not exceed 2 3/4″.
  4. Minimum width of the body at the axles should be 1 3/4″.
  5. Maximum length must not exceed 7″.
  6. Most Pinewood Derby Tracks have a 1/4″ high guide rail. Bottom clearance must be minimum 3/8″, to avoid dragging on this rail. Low hanging weights will often drag on the track.
  7. Maximum overall height of the car may not exceed 4″.
  8. The wheelbase (distance between the axles) must not exceed the distance between the precut axle slots on the standard pinewood block, i.e. 4 3/8″.
  9. The car may not exceed 141 grams as determined by the scale at the race.  We use grams instead of ounces because grams give better weight accuracy. *
  10. Axles and wheels must be official BSA equipment. The body must be designed from official Gran Prix Pinewood Derby kit. (No preformed bodies like Pinecar brand)
  11. The wheels may be lightly sanded or polished to remove bumps and blemishes. They must not be grooved, hollowed out, cut, or otherwise redesigned.
  12. The wheels should be lubricated with graphite or powdered silicone. Oil and other liquid lubricants are prohibited.
  13. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
  14. The car must not ride on any kind of springs or suspension system, other than a suspension system that is actually carved from the pinewood block.
  15. Loose materials are not allowed on the cars during the race.
  16. No Liquid weights are allowed

At check-in, your car will be checked for the above dimensions and weight.  We also will have an “Open Class” race for cars that parents or siblings make, or which otherwise don’t conform to the above rules.

NOTE: If a car has an extremely pointed or high front end, some electronic race timers may not accurately determine the winner of a race. Our new track uses optical timers, so please understand if we have to re-race some cars because of designs that might impact the timing system.

Hint: Use 6 small and 6 large thumbtacks as part of your cars weight.  Mount them to the bottom of your car. You can easily remove or add them at the race to reach exactly 5 ounces without having to drill out your car if it’s over the weight limit.

* We will try to make the official scale that we use for the race available prior to race day so that you can pre-check your weight.

New District Name

All – Recently our council made the decision to merge our Tocobaga District with the New Fire District.  The new name of the combined districts will be Ft Brooke District!  So if you see that mentioned in the new communications that are coming out, you’ll know that’s us!

Veteran’s Day Parade Information

The lineup for the 2014 Tampa Veteran’s Day Parade has finally been announced, and the Pack will be in position E7.  This location is on Baseball Ave on the SOUTH side of Morgan Woods  where the hiking trail is.  A link to the official parade lineup map can be found here.

For our first time parade attendees, here are some quick Do’s and Don’ts for the parade:

DO be there before 8:00AM  the roads will be blocked this year at 8:30AM
DO drop a car off somewhere around the Post Office on Paula Drive so you can get out of there quickly
DO put sunscreen on your scout before you get out there
DO bring a bottle of water
DO have your scout wear their CLASS A UNIFORM  make them look sharp!
DO bring a camera  – there will be lots of picture moments
DO feel free to walk with the Pack.  Scouts will be in the front lined up by Den, parents and siblings will be behind us
DO feel free to bring a wagon to carry your stuff  although I can attest that towing one gets old right about at Fountain Ave
DO smile, have fun and wave to all the smiling faces we’ll see
DO take the time to spot and salute the veterans that we’ll see along the way

…and the very short Don’t list:

DON’T wear beads with your Class A or other non-uniform items
DON’T bring beads or other items (candy, flyers, etc) to throw or hand out
DON’T misbehave  – we’re not only representing Cub Scouts and the BSA, we’re representing the best of our schools and communities!

If it’s going to be chilly when we’re lining up, and it’s better to layer and wear a t-shirt and long sleeve shirt under your uniform than to wear a jacket.  It may start off a little chilly, but once we get walking they usually warm up pretty quick.  When we get there, we’ll practice lining up and rotating the Dens so that everyone gets a chance to hold the pack’s banner.

Need Help With Your Scout’s New Uniform?

If you’re new to Scouting and are wondering what you need for your Scout’s new uniform, check out this interactive site that BSA devleoped for showing what you need and where it goes on the uniform.  All the stuff marked “Required” is the stuff you get, and the stuff marked “Awarded” is the stuff he earns.

Keep in mind that in Pack 246, we only require the uniform from the belt up.  If you want to buy the pants and socks you can, but you don’t have to.

If you need something to print out and take with you, you can print this Cub Scout Uniform Inspection Sheet.  It’s the same one we use when we do uniform inspections prior to the Veteran’s Day Parade.

Crossover 2014

Tomorrow evening will begin the Crossover Campout.

Friday: 5:00 pm – Begin arriving at Camp Brorein. Sagamore Campsite

Saturday:

8:30 – Opening Flag Ceremony

9:00 – Burial of ashes from Flag Retirement Ceremony

9:30 – 10:30 Morning hike. Identifying indigenous plants and animal tracks.

10:30 – noon – Free time.

noon – 1:00 Lunch on your own

1:00 – 4:00 Activities to be announced

4:30- 5:30 Eat Dinner (Hamburgers, Hotdogs, & sides)
